What questions do they ask at the German spouse visa interview in Lagos and Accra?
Short answer
Applicants who made videos report questions about how you met, your wedding, and your spouse's life, job and address in Germany. The German Consulate General in Lagos and the German Embassy in Accra both say a short interview is part of the spouse visa appointment, along with identity and document checks, fingerprints and the fee.

What the missions say happens at the appointment
Lagos and Accra describe the spouse visa appointment in the same words. Your identity and original documents are checked, a short interview is held, your fingerprints and photo are taken, and you pay the fee.
Lagos adds that you must bring all your documents to this appointment. Documents sent in advance are not considered.
Neither page lists the interview questions. Everything below comes from applicants' own videos, so treat it as their experience, not a fixed list.
Questions applicants report being asked
These themes come up again and again in applicant videos. Each report names its mission where the video says it. Where a year is given, it is when the video was posted.
- How you met and how the relationship started. A Lagos applicant (video posted 2025, interview about 3 years earlier) says the officer wanted the full story. A Ghanaian applicant's husband (2023) says she was asked when and how he proposed and how she felt about it.
- The wedding: the date, the place and the type of marriage. A Lagos applicant and the Ghanaian applicant (2023) report being asked this. The Ghanaian applicant was also asked who officiated and who signed the marriage certificate.
- Your spouse's basic details: name, date of birth, phone number and address in Germany. Two Lagos applicants (one in 2021) say they had to give the full address with street, house number and post code. One of them says you must know the phone number by heart.
- Your spouse's life in Germany. Three Lagos applicants (2021, 2025 and one more) report questions on their spouse's job and pay. The Ghanaian applicant (2023) was asked when he moved and where he works.
- Money between you. The Ghanaian applicant (2023) was asked if her husband supports her and how much each month. A Lagos applicant (2025) was asked how she supports herself.
- Earlier marriages and children. The Ghanaian applicant (2023) was asked about both partners. Two Lagos applicants (one in 2021) report being asked about their husband's.
- Very personal details. One Lagos applicant (2021) was asked if her husband wears glasses, his shoe size, his favourite food and his father's age. Another Lagos applicant lists, from her and her friends' interviews, tattoos, piercings, shoe size and the honeymoon.
Will they ask you questions in German?
Some applicants report a few simple German questions to check their A1 certificate. The Ghanaian applicant (2023) was asked to say her husband's phone number in German, spell her name in German and describe where he lives. A Lagos applicant lists, from her and her friends' interviews, a request to introduce yourself in German.
A Lagos applicant (2025) whose husband held an EU Blue Card says she was not asked for an A1 certificate, and the officer only asked if she spoke German.
How long does it last, and is your spouse questioned too?
Reported length varies a lot. The Ghanaian applicant's husband (2023) says her interview took about one and a half hours and felt like a conversation. An applicant whose husband studies in Germany (2025, mission not named) says hers was done in 10 to 15 minutes.
The same applicant says the officer asked some questions four or five times, such as her husband's date of birth, to see if the answer stayed the same. She advises saying "I don't remember" rather than guessing. Another applicant (mission not named) says the officer corrected her when her dates did not match an earlier answer.
Your spouse in Germany may be asked the same questions. One Lagos applicant (2021) says her husband was interviewed in Germany at the same time as her. A Lagos applicant says officers can call the spouse in Germany if they have doubts, and the student's spouse (2025, mission not named) says a weak interview, mostly where there is a big age gap, can lead to a second interview for both of you.
Checks on the marriage and false information
The Lagos consulate says it can use several checks in family reunion cases. One of them is a spousal interview to assess whether the marriage is genuine. Lagos says it tells applicants if a check is needed, and applicants pay all the costs of these checks.
Lagos also warns that an application with forged documents or false information is rejected straight away. The applicant is entered into a warning database, which affects later visa applications, and gets a Schengen-wide entry ban (a ban on entering any Schengen country).
The Accra page does not mention these checks or penalties.
