Who this guide is for

You have (or expect) an admission letter from a German university and you are applying for a national (D) student visa at a German mission in Nigeria or Ghana.

In Nigeria, intake and biometrics for Lagos moved to the VFS Global centre in Lekki on 25 March 2026. Rules change often, so always check the mission page linked in Sources before you pay for anything.

The steps, in order

  1. 01Get your admission letter (or conditional admission) and pay first-year tuition if your university is private.
  2. 02Prove your money: open and fund a blocked account, or get a formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from someone living in Germany.
  3. 03Get health insurance that covers you from entry.
  4. 04Book your appointment on the consular portal. You can join the waiting list with placeholder documents and replace them later.
  5. 05Prepare every document as an original plus a photocopy, staples removed, in the order of the mission's checklist.
  6. 06Appointment day: document check, a short interview (and at Lagos, often a written test on your field of study), then biometrics and fees.
  7. 07Your passport comes back by courier with the decision. Waiting times vary a lot.

Money: how much you must show

One accepted proof is a blocked account holding EUR 11,904 for the first year, which is EUR 992 a month. The German Missions in Nigeria and the German Embassy in Accra both showed this figure when we checked on 23 October 2026. It changes, so check it before you fund your account.

The other accepted proof at both missions is a Verpflichtungserklärung signed by a person living in Germany (not older than 6 months, covering the whole stay, marked 'nachgewiesen'). The Nigeria missions say that in some cases a part-time job contract in Germany (up to 20 hours a week, EUR 1,091 net a month) can also be used.

Only the bank's official confirmation showing the amount paid in and the monthly amount counts; a transfer receipt is not enough. Tuition is shown separately: see the proof-of-funds article for what Lagos and Accra ask for.

Language

For a German-taught programme without a preparatory language course, German Missions in Nigeria ask for C1. Goethe or ÖSD certificates are accepted only if the exam was taken in Nigeria, and certificates older than one year are not accepted.

For English-taught programmes, follow what your admission letter and university require, and be ready to answer the interview in clear English. A few words of German help; applicants report being asked for some.

Documents people get wrong

The mission's sorting list is the only checklist that counts. These are the items applicants in the Nigeria-to-Germany community most often trip over.

  • WAEC/NECO: attach the scratch card, not just the result printout.
  • Birth certificate and age affidavit: names and dates must match your passport exactly.
  • Motivation letter: write it yourself, for this programme. A generic letter is the most cited refusal reason.
  • CV: it must agree with your motivation letter and your spoken answers, line by line.
  • Work experience: an employer that cannot be found online can sink an otherwise strong file.
  • Passport photos: the standard is strictly enforced, check yours in advance.

What the interview is like

Expect it to be short and fast. You may be behind glass with a microphone, so speak clearly and loudly. A short interview does not mean anything bad.

The officer reads your file while you answer. Your answers must match your motivation letter and CV.

Know your programme's name, its standard length, and the city and state your university is in. Some officers also ask basic facts about Germany, like the capital, the number of federal states and who leads the government.

Wanting to look for a job in Germany after graduating is not a red flag. The law gives graduates up to 18 months to look for work. Say it honestly if it is your plan.

If you are refused

Since 1 July 2025 you can no longer ask the mission to reconsider a refusal (the remonstration procedure was abolished for all visa refusals worldwide). You can apply again at any time with a new application, or take legal action as your refusal letter explains.

To release your blocked-account money, the formal refusal letter is usually enough for the bank, according to the German Missions in Nigeria.

Questions officers ask

Applicants reported being asked these. Reading them is not the same as answering them out loud.

“State your full name for me.”

“Walk me through your education — when did you finish secondary school, and what have you been doing since your last degree?”

“What do you do for work at the moment?”

“Why did you choose this particular programme?”

“Who is your sponsor, and what do they do for a living?”

“Which secondary school examination did you take, and do you still have the original certificate or scratch card?”
