What documents do you need for a German student visa from Nigeria or Ghana?
Short answer
You need your passport, university admission letter, proof of money, CV, motivation letter, birth certificate and school results; the Embassy in Accra also asks for health insurance. Follow your own mission's list. The German Missions in Nigeria want every document as an original plus a black-and-white A4 copy, sorted in the order of their sorting list, and they do not accept unsorted or incomplete files.

Which checklist should you follow?
Each mission publishes its own list, so start from your mission's page, not a blog or agent checklist.
In Nigeria, the student visa page and the printable sorting list set these rules: bring every document as an original and a copy. Copies must be A4 and black and white; colour copies are not accepted. Do not staple anything. Sort your file in the order of the list. Incomplete and unsorted applications are not accepted.
Bring the full set to your appointment. The Nigeria page says documents sent in advance cannot be considered.
The sorting list is re-issued from time to time. The one checked for this page says "Status: June 2026" at the bottom. Check the date on the PDF before you print it.
What documents do Lagos and Abuja ask for?
The sorting list has 20 numbered items. These are the main items, with the rules from the German Missions in Nigeria page:
- Application form, the section 54 declaration and the data protection form, each signed with place and date.
- Passport: the original plus a copy of the data page. It must be issued in the last 10 years, be valid for at least 6 more months, and have at least two free pages.
- Admission letter from a German university stating the course, the start date and the language of instruction.
- Proof of money: a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or a formal obligation letter. If your university charges tuition, proof that the first year is paid. See the proof-of-funds article for amounts.
- CV listing your certificates, training and work experience.
- Motivation letter, signed, with your expectations for the stay and your career plans.
- Language certificate, if your course needs one. It must come from an ALTE-standard tester and may not be older than one year.
- Birth certificate (rules below), school results in order (primary, secondary, WAEC or National Diploma, bachelor, master) and transcripts.
- Biometric photo: not older than 6 months, white background, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, not glued or stapled. The web page says 2 photos; the June 2026 PDF says 1.
- A prepaid courier envelope addressed to yourself.
Which birth certificate and affidavits do you need in Nigeria?
The rule depends on your birth date. If you were born on or after 15 December 1992, bring an NPC (National Population Commission) birth certificate from the NPC of your place of birth.
If you were born before that date, or you have no NPC certificate, bring three things: a certified copy of the local birth register extract based on the first registration, an affidavit ("Declaration of Age") from one parent, or from the head of the family if both parents are deceased, and a copy of an ID showing that person's signature. The head of the family must be at least 10 years older than you.
If your name changed, or there is a mistake on any document, the mission asks for a court affidavit, for example an Affidavit of Change of Names (with the newspaper advert) or an Affidavit of Reconciliation of Names, plus a copy of the signer's ID.
Student applicants in Lagos describe birth certificate and age-affidavit problems as a growing reason for refusals in early 2026. One applicant shared a refusal letter that cited unresolved doubts about identity and date of birth.
What documents does the Embassy in Accra ask for?
As in Nigeria, you upload documents to the Consular Services Portal first, then bring the originals to the appointment. Points to note on the Embassy in Accra's list:
- Passport valid for at least 6 more months, with at least two free pages.
- Birth certificate based on first registration.
- WAEC certificates: both BECE and WASSCE.
- Language proof in the language of instruction if your admission letter does not confirm it. Without a preparatory language course this is, as a rule, at least B2.
- Health insurance: incoming health insurance from entry until you enrol, and proof of statutory health insurance from enrolment. The Embassy says travel health insurance alone is not sufficient.
- Blocked account: once your application is previewed on the portal, only the bank's official opening confirmation, showing the amount paid in and the monthly amount, is accepted. A transfer receipt is not enough.

Common mistakes, and what happens with forged documents
WAEC scratch card: applicants in Lagos advise attaching the WAEC scratch card so the result can be checked on the WAEC portal, after reports of WAEC and NECO results being doubted. The scratch card is not on the official list; this is applicant advice.
Forged documents: the German Missions in Nigeria say an application with forged documents or false information is rejected immediately. The applicant is entered into a warning database, which affects later visa applications, and is given a Schengen-wide entry ban.
