After the decision

Your German student visa was rejected. What can you do now?

By VisaRoom EditorialChecked 23 October 2026For applicants in Lagos, Abuja and Accra

Short answer

After a German student visa rejection, two routes remain: a lawsuit at the Berlin Administrative Court (the German Embassy in London names this court), following the instructions and deadline in your refusal letter, or a new visa application, which you can submit at any time. You can no longer ask the mission to reconsider: the Federal Foreign Office abolished this step (remonstration) worldwide from 1 July 2025.

Can you still ask the mission to reconsider?

Remonstration was a letter asking the embassy or consulate to look at a refused visa again. The Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) abolished it for visa rejections worldwide from 1 July 2025. It was not set out in law; the Foreign Office says it had been granted voluntarily.

The Foreign Office notice covers visa rejections in general. Its pilot, which started on 1 June 2023, suspended remonstration for both Schengen visas and national visas. A student visa is a national visa, so it is covered. The German Embassy in Accra carries the same notice on its visa pages.

If you see older advice telling you to write to the mission and ask it to reconsider, it is out of date. The German Embassy in London tells applicants refused after 1 July 2025 not to send remonstration letters, because the embassy will no longer reply to them.

Route 1: take your case to the Berlin Administrative Court

The Foreign Office says court review under the law is not limited by the change. The German Embassy in London names the court: you file a complaint with the Berlin Administrative Court (Verwaltungsgericht Berlin) in Germany. It must be done in German and involves court costs.

The German Embassy in Dublin says the refusal letter itself explains this remedy and its deadline. Follow the instructions and the deadline written in your own letter. This page is not legal advice; if you are thinking of going to court, get advice from a qualified lawyer in Germany.

One refused applicant from Nigeria went to the Berlin court with paid help and won about 4 months later. Applicants describe the court route as slow and not free.

Route 2: apply for the visa again

The Foreign Office says every applicant can submit a new visa application at any time after a rejection.

The German Embassy in Dublin adds that a new application is reviewed neutrally under the law in force at that time, so you present all your documents again, and it is generally charged the usual visa fee. The German Embassy in London says complete documents are essential to reduce the risk of rejection.

Why student visas get refused: what applicants report

These come from student visa applicants at the Lagos consulate and VFS Lekki, June 2025 to September 2026. They are reports, not an official list.

  • A motivation letter judged too generic or not strong enough. This was the reason members repeated most often.
  • A CV, motivation letter and spoken answers that do not agree with each other.
  • A blocked account that was not fully funded.
  • Doubts about identity or date of birth. One member's letter cited section 5(1) of the German Residence Act. Problems with birth certificates or age affidavits were reported as a growing reason through early 2026.
  • A low CGPA or weak transcript, reported from late 2025.
  • WAEC or NECO certificates the mission doubted. Members advise attaching the WAEC scratch card so the result can be verified.
  • An employer on the CV that cannot be found online.

How to get your blocked account released after a refusal

The German Missions in Nigeria say a formal rejection letter is usually enough for the bank to release your blocked account, or for the university to refund some or all of your tuition fees.

If you withdrew or cancelled your application and got no rejection letter, or the bank does not accept your letter, book an appointment on the missions' website for a consular declaration. The missions list the fee as EUR 36, paid in naira, and each applicant needs their own appointment.

People also ask

Can I still write a remonstration letter to the German consulate in Lagos?

No. The Federal Foreign Office abolished remonstration for visa rejections worldwide from 1 July 2025, after a pilot that covered both Schengen and national visas. 1

Can I reapply after a German student visa rejection?

Yes. The Federal Foreign Office says you can submit a new visa application at any time after a rejection. The German Embassy in Dublin says the new application is reviewed neutrally under current law and is generally charged the usual fee. 14

How do I get my blocked account money back after a refusal?

Give your bank the formal rejection letter; the German Missions in Nigeria say it is usually enough to release the account. If there is no letter, or it is not accepted, you book a consular declaration appointment, which costs EUR 36 paid in naira. 6

What happens if I submitted a forged document?

The German Missions in Nigeria say an application with forged or false documents is rejected automatically. The applicant is entered into a warning database that affects later applications and gets a Schengen-wide entry ban. 7
