Who qualifies

Do I need Studienkolleg with WAEC, NECO or WASSCE, or can I go straight into a German bachelor's?

By VisaRoom EditorialChecked 29 October 2026For applicants in Lagos, Abuja and Accra

Short answer

uni-assist says a Nigerian WASSC qualifies you for the Studienkolleg (the preparatory course) if you fulfil all requirements. DAAD Ghana says a Ghanaian WASSCE does not allow direct entry: you need one year of university study in Ghana or a one-year Studienkolleg in Germany. Neither page describes direct entry for these certificates.

What is Studienkolleg and how long does it take?

A Studienkolleg is a preparatory course in Germany. DAAD says that if your school-leaving certificate does not entitle you to start studying directly, you can apply to a Studienkolleg.

DAAD says preparation usually takes two semesters. Students who perform very well may be able to shorten it to one semester. At the end you sit a final exam, the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test). Passing it makes you eligible to apply for programmes that match your Studienkolleg course.

For certificates from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland, DAAD says you will often need two or three semesters of comparable study in your home country, or a Studienkolleg in Germany, before you can begin.

What do the sources say for WAEC and NECO from Nigeria?

uni-assist assesses your certificate using the guidelines of the German body that evaluates foreign education (the ZAB). On its Nigeria page it says that if you fulfil all requirements, your WASSC qualifies you for the Studienkolleg.

For a WASSC or NECO, uni-assist asks for a copy of your certificate from WAEC or NECO. It also asks for a scratch card, or the card number and PIN on it, so your results can be checked.

DAAD says the final decision is always made by the university, so ask its international office.

What does DAAD Ghana say about WASSCE?

DAAD Ghana says a WASSCE does not allow direct entry into a German university. Entry is only possible after one year of university study in Ghana or a one-year Studienkolleg in Germany.

It adds that the applicant is usually placed in a preparatory course offered by the university, and that these courses usually need B2 German.

DAAD's main page says two semesters, with one possible for strong students. DAAD Ghana says one year. We report both as written.

What does Studienkolleg cost, and what German do you need?

  • Fees: DAAD says public Studienkollegs are generally free of charge, except for the semester fee. Private Studienkollegs frequently charge fees.
  • German: DAAD says the courses are taught in German (its Studienkolleg page says most offer courses in German). You must show a good command of German (levels B1 to B2) when you are admitted, and pass an entrance exam. uni-assist says the language rules and accepted certificates can differ between Studienkollegs.
  • English-taught degrees: uni-assist says the Studienkolleg and the Feststellungsprüfung usually can only be taken in German, even if your degree is taught in English.

How do you check your own case?

DAAD points to its admission database, which is based on the anabin database. You can use it to see how Germany rates your school certificate. DAAD also says the final decision is always made by the university itself, so contact the international office of the university you want.

uni-assist has a tool called Check: university admission. If you are unsure, uni-assist says it will decide while processing your application whether you can start studying directly or need a Studienkolleg.

Not every university has a Studienkolleg. uni-assist says application deadlines for Studienkollegs are often earlier than for degree courses, and that admission criteria are set by each university and Studienkolleg.
