What German level do I need for a student visa from Nigeria or Ghana, and which certificates are accepted?
Short answer
For a student visa, the German Missions in Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) list C1 for study in German without a preparatory language course, and A2 for a language course. The German Embassy in Accra asks, as a rule, for at least B2 in the language of instruction, without a preparatory language course, if the university hasn't confirmed your language skills.

What level does the Lagos consulate ask for?
The German Missions in Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) publish one table of language levels by purpose of stay. As a general rule, it lists these levels for students:
- Study in German without a prior course: C1.
- Study in German with a prior course: none.
- Language course: A2.

What about English-taught programmes?
The Nigeria missions' language page lists no row for English-taught study.
German law asks for proof of the language of instruction only if the university didn't test it when it admitted you and you won't learn it in a preparatory course (Section 16b of the Residence Act, in our translation). So check your admission letter first. The Accra embassy asks for the admission letter to state the language of instruction.
What does the Accra embassy ask for?
The German Embassy Accra asks for proof of your skills in the language of instruction, if the university hasn't confirmed them in your admission notification. Without a preparatory language course, it says as a rule at least B2 in that language.
The two missions word this differently. Accra names the language of instruction, not German specifically. The Lagos table lists C1 for German-taught study without a prior course. Follow the rule of the mission where you apply.
Which certificates do the Nigeria missions accept?
The Nigeria missions accept only certificates from institutions that test to the standards of ALTE (the Association of Language Testers in Europe). If you take the exam in Nigeria, they accept only the Goethe-Institut or the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD, the Austrian German diploma).
They don't accept certificates older than one year. You can take the exam module by module (reading, listening, speaking, writing) and send the module certificates together. The certificate is complete only when all four modules are passed, and the oldest module exam can't be older than one year.
The embassy and consulate don't run language exams themselves. The Nigeria page also says how you prepare is up to you: language school, self-study, a private teacher or online courses.

Does my university or Studienkolleg ask for a different level?
The visa level is separate from what your university asks. DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service) says most higher education institutions require at least B2 in German, because most programmes are taught in German. Programmes taught in English are exempt.
If you need a Studienkolleg (a preparatory course for university entry), DAAD says you must show German at B1 to B2 when you are admitted, and pass an entrance exam. DAAD's wording gives a range, not one level.
