Where and how do I apply in Accra?
Everything below comes from the Opportunity Card page of the German Embassy Accra, and nothing else.
The Accra page says applicants from Sierra Leone and Liberia should choose "Ghana" as their place of residence.
The embassy says the Consular Service Portal leads you through the procedure step by step. After you send your details and documents, this happens:
- 01The embassy checks your details and documents for completeness.
- 02You get feedback on whether your documents are complete and were submitted successfully.
- 03You then receive the link to book an appointment at the visa section.
- 04At the appointment, your identity and original documents are checked, a short interview is held, your fingerprints and photo are taken, and the fee is paid.

How much does it cost and what funds must I show?
The visa fee is EUR 75. The embassy says it is payable in cash in GHS at the embassy's current exchange rate, or by credit card.
For proof of funds, the Accra page names three forms. The blocked account must hold at least EUR 1,091 for each month.
- A blocked account.
- A formal obligation ("Verpflichtungserklärung") under Sections 66 to 68 of the German Residence Act, covering the whole stay and signed by a person living in Germany at the local competent office in Germany. The page says it is accepted only with the remark "nachgewiesen", and it must not be older than 6 months on your intended date of entering the Schengen Area or Germany. A new formal obligation is needed for each new visa application.
- An employment contract for a part-time job in Germany of up to 20 hours per week.

What bank confirmation and health insurance does Accra ask for?
The embassy asks you to open the blocked account in good time before you apply. It accepts only the bank's official confirmation that the account is open, showing the amount paid in and the amount available per month.
A confirmation without this information is not sufficient. Neither is proof of a deposit or transfer without the bank's confirmation.
For health insurance, the page asks for incoming medical insurance and proof of public or private insurance covering you as an expat in Germany. It says a travel insurance is not sufficient.

Which documents does the Accra page list?
Among the documents on the Accra list are:
- A birth certificate based on first registration.
- School leaving certificates: WAEC certificates BECE and WASSCE.
- Proof of recent job or vocational training place search in Germany, for example email correspondence about applications, job offers or agency enquiries.
- A residence permit for Ghana, if applicable, as proof of legal residence in Ghana. The page says this is only for applicants with a nationality other than Ghanaian, Liberian or Sierra Leonean.

What if my degree is not recognised yet?
The Accra page says a skilled worker under German immigration law must have a vocational training or university degree recognised in Germany. You can check recognition on ANABIN, where the university and the specific degree both need to be listed.
In the page's words: "If your university and/or your specific degree are not listed, you need to apply for recognition at the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB)."
For a not yet skilled worker, the page lists three conditions. First, a qualification recognised in the country where it was acquired, with ZAB determining this (you apply to ZAB directly). Second, proof of German at A1 or English at B2. Third, 6 points under the points system.
The language certificate must be recognised by ALTE and be no more than one year old.

What happens after I apply?
The embassy says it must involve the competent authority in Germany in the visa procedure. It adds that, depending on previous stays, the answer may take some time, so you should apply in good time.
The embassy also says it cannot answer enquiries about the status of an application within the first 4 weeks.
The page we read does not say how long the wait for an appointment is.

Reading the answer is the easy part. Say it out loud.
The officer will ask about this. Answer in your own words, then read what your answer missed. Your first practice interview is free.
