How long does the Opportunity Card take in Nigeria and Ghana? Appointment wait, decision and portal status

By VisaRoom EditorialChecked 31 October 2026For applicants in Lagos and Accra

Short answer

No official page we read gives a number of weeks or months for the Opportunity Card appointment or decision. The German Missions in Nigeria say they cannot give a specific time frame and do not offer expedited processing. To see where your application stands, log in to the Consular Services Portal (the Foreign Office's online visa site). 34

Lagos: what are the steps after you apply?

The Lagos Opportunity Card page describes the steps. You apply online through the Consular Services Portal, fill out the application form and upload your documents.

Your details and documents are then checked for completeness, and you get feedback on whether they are complete and were submitted successfully.

After that, you receive the link to book an appointment at the visa section. At the appointment, your identity and original documents are checked and a short interview is held. Your fingerprints and photo are recorded and the fee is paid.

Lagos: who gets an appointment first

The Lagos booking page says applicants receive an appointment once it is their turn. It says the Consulate schedules appointments in strict chronological order of the waiting list.

The same page says that once all applicants from the waiting list have received an appointment, applicants who registered themselves on the Foreign Portal receive an appointment. So applicants already on the older waiting list are given appointments first, and portal applicants after them. The page doesn't say in what order portal applicants are given theirs.

The page lists the Opportunity Card among the visas applied for online. It does not give a number of weeks or months for this wait.

The Lagos FAQ also has a section on a new waiting-list system from 14 July 2025. That section is about short-stay (Schengen) visas and does not mention the Opportunity Card. We do not use its rules here.

How do I check my status on the Nigeria portal?

The Nigeria portal page says you can check the current status of your application online in the Consular Services Portal. It says that once a decision has been made, you are told the next steps through your user account.

The page does not describe individual status messages, so we cannot tell you what each one means.

Nigeria: is there a processing time, and when can I ask for an update?

This section draws on the German Missions in Nigeria (the FAQ answers as the Consulate General in Lagos). Their FAQ says: "We cannot provide a specific time frame, but all applications are handled as quickly as possible." It adds: "We do not offer expedited processing."

On status updates, the FAQ asks you to avoid requesting them unless more than three months have passed without any communication from the Missions.

The Lagos long-stay (national visa) page also says status enquiries cannot be answered within the first 4 weeks (12 weeks for family reunion). It does not name the Opportunity Card.

Both answers sit in general FAQ sections that are not limited to one visa type.

Accra: how long does the embassy say it takes?

The Accra Opportunity Card page says the embassy must involve the competent authority in Germany in the visa procedure. It says the answer may take some time, depending on previous stays, and tells you to apply in good time.

The page also says status enquiries cannot be answered within the first 4 weeks of the application.
