How do you apply for the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) from Nigeria?
Short answer
You apply online on the Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal: fill in the form, upload your documents, wait for the completeness check, then use the link you are sent to book your appointment. As a rule, the Consulate General in Lagos handles all visa applications from Nigeria, according to the German Missions in Nigeria.

How to apply, step by step
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is one of the visas the German Missions in Nigeria take online through the Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de). The steps they publish are:
- 01Create an account on the Consular Services Portal.
- 02Fill in the application form online and upload your documents.
- 03Your details and documents are checked for completeness. The portal calls this a preliminary check, and you are told online whether everything is correct and complete. If something is wrong, you can fix it online.
- 04You get feedback that your documents are complete and submitted.
- 05You then get the link to book an appointment at the visa section.
- 06At the appointment, staff check your identity and original documents, hold a short interview, take your fingerprints and photo, and you pay the fee.
How does the waiting list work?
The missions say appointments are given in strict chronological order of the waiting list. People who registered for an appointment earlier and already have a registration number do not need to create a portal account. Once everyone on that older list has an appointment, people who registered on the portal get theirs.
One applicants reported in February 2026 that the portal warned their pending application would be deleted in 30 days if not processed. Other members replied that everyone on the waiting list gets this email each month, and that you log in through the link and confirm you are still interested.
One member in the same thread said you can edit the form when you are invited to submit for preliminary review. This is an applicant report, not an official statement.
Which category should you book under?
The missions say bookings must be made in the correct category. If you book in the wrong category you will not be admitted and must book again.
One applicants in September 2025 was trying to book and was asked for the issuing date and issuing authority of a 'Vorabzustimmung' (pre-approval from a German immigration office). Other members replied that those fields belong to the skilled-worker category, not the Opportunity Card, and that you should choose Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) where the form asks what you are applying as.
In February 2026, another applicant in the thread said they had picked employment instead of Opportunity Card when registering.
Lagos or Abuja: where do you apply?
The German Missions in Nigeria say that, as a rule, the Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for all visa applications.
The Embassy in Abuja takes long-stay visas only for a short list of cases, and only for people living in certain northern states and the FCT. That list covers diplomats, some scholarship holders and programme participants, spouses and children of Germans in some cases, and re-entry visas. The Opportunity Card is not on it. If you are unsure, the missions ask you to contact the Embassy or the Consulate General before booking.
The portal page adds that using the portal does not change which mission is responsible for you.
Can you keep two visa applications open?
One applicants reported in February 2026 that they had a student visa application waiting for over six months. After they applied for the Opportunity Card, the embassy emailed them that the student visa application had been cancelled because they changed visa category. This is one person's report, not a published rule. The German Missions' pages we checked do not cover running two applications at once.
