What do the official pages say about VFS and the German student visa in Lagos?
Short answer
The mission (consulate or embassy) issues the visa, but only after the foreigners authority in the university town in Germany has approved it. The German Missions in Nigeria say the Lagos consulate works with the service provider VFS to take in applications for study purposes. 16

What does VFS do?
The Lagos study visa page says: "The German Consulate operates with the service provider VFS to take in applications for study purposes."
The Lagos pages we saved describe VFS only in that way. They do not say more about it, so this article does not either. Check the Lagos page for the latest instructions before you book.

What happens at the appointment?
After you apply in the online portal, you receive a link to book an appointment at the visa section. Lagos and Accra describe the appointment the same way:
- Your identity and original documents are checked.
- A short interview is held.
- Your biometric data (fingerprints and photo) is recorded.
- The fee is paid.
Who decides?
The Federal Foreign Office says the mission abroad forwards your application for an opinion to the foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde) in the town of the university. The mission can only issue the visa for entry once that authority has given its approval.
The Lagos National visa page says only: "The Consulate General must involve the competent authority in Germany in the visa procedure." It does not name the foreigners authority.
Depending on previous stays, the answer from that authority may take some time, so apply in good time. The Accra embassy says it must involve the competent authority in Germany too.
The Lagos page says: "As a rule, the Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for visa applications."
What do the pages say about asking for a status update?
Lagos and Accra give three separate statements:
- Lagos, National visa page: "inquiries regarding the processing status cannot be answered within the first 12 weeks for family reunion visas and within the first 4 weeks for all other visa categories."
- Lagos, FAQ, answering "I had my interview some time ago. Can I get a status update?": "Please avoid requesting status updates unless more than three months have passed without any communication from us."
- Accra: inquiries about the status of the application cannot be answered within the first 4 weeks.
How do you contact the Lagos visa section?
The Lagos FAQ asks you to reply directly to an email the consulate sent you, so it can see the full conversation. It names info@lago.auswaertiges-amt.de as its only contact email.
Include your full name, date of birth, passport number and barcode or reference number (if available), and explain your request in complete sentences. Messages without these details, or unclear ones, will not receive a response.
Information about an application is given only to you or to a person you have authorised in writing, because of data protection.
The Lagos consulate page also lists a visa enquiries phone line: +234 (0)201 4621 820, Monday until Thursday, 09:00 am to 11:00 am. The consulate is at 15, Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos.
After the decision
Lagos says your original documents will be returned once your application has been processed. The Lagos student document list includes "a self-addressed prepaid courier envelope from any major courier service". The page does not say what it is used for.
If the visa is granted, it is your duty to check that the information on the visa sticker is correct and complete and to report errors to the consulate immediately. The consulate is not liable for financial damage caused by corrections not reported in good time.

Does VFS decide my German student visa?
The pages we read do not say that. The Lagos page says the consulate works with VFS to take in applications for study purposes. The Foreign Office says the mission issues the visa, and only after the foreigners authority has approved. 16
Is there an interview at the German student visa appointment?
Lagos and Accra both say "a short interview will be conducted" at the appointment at the visa section, together with the identity and original documents check, biometrics and payment of the fee. The pages do not say who conducts it. 15
Can someone else ask about my German student visa application for me?
In Lagos, information about an application is given only to you or to a person you have authorised in writing. 2
