What do the official pages say about processing time?
The Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt, Germany's foreign ministry) says the processing time for student visas may take several weeks, in individual cases even months.
The Lagos consulate says processing varies with the individual case. It says it cannot give a specific time frame, but that all applications are handled as quickly as possible.
We did not find a processing time on the Accra embassy student visa page.
When can you ask for an update, and can you speed it up?
Lagos has two statements. Its national visa page says it cannot answer status enquiries in the first 4 weeks for visas other than family reunion. Its FAQ asks you not to request updates unless more than three months have passed without any communication from the consulate.
Accra says it cannot answer enquiries about the status of your application in the first 4 weeks.
On speeding up: The Lagos FAQ says the consulate does not offer expedited processing. The Federal Foreign Office says its help desk cannot speed up the process or check the status of an application.
When should you apply to universities?
The Accra student visa page lists an admission letter from a German university among the documents for the application. DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service) gives the usual windows:
- Winter semester, starting in September or October: applications open in early May and close on 15 July at most higher education institutions.
- Summer semester, starting in March or April: applications run from early December to 15 January.
How long does uni-assist take?
Some universities take foreign applications through uni-assist (the University Application Service for International Students). DAAD says whether you apply to uni-assist or direct depends on your country, entrance qualification and subject.
On its Studienkolleg (preparatory course) page, uni-assist says you will usually receive your evaluation result within four to six weeks. It advises applying as early as possible, ideally at least eight weeks before the end of the application deadline. Both statements come from the Studienkolleg page, not the general application pages.
Private universities may have other deadlines, and uni-assist says Studienkolleg deadlines are often set earlier.
