Which German mission handles my student visa in Nigeria: Lagos, Abuja or Accra?

By VisaRoom EditorialChecked 29 October 2026For applicants in Lagos, Abuja and Accra

Short answer

For a German student visa from Nigeria, the German Missions say that as a rule the Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for all visa applications. Abuja is an exception, and only if you live in one of the listed states and one of the listed cases applies to you. 1

Is Lagos the default mission for a Nigerian student visa?

The Responsible Mission page of the German Missions in Nigeria says that, as a rule, the Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for all visa applications.

The same page ends with a line for unclear cases: if in doubt, contact the Embassy or Consulate General before booking an appointment.

When does Abuja handle a student visa?

The page says there are a few exceptions if you live in one of these states: FCT, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Nassarawa, Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno.

Living in one of those states is not enough on its own. One of the listed cases must also apply to you. For the long-term visa, the page lists these cases:

  • Members of the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja (plus spouse and children) and staff of diplomatic missions for accreditation in Germany.
  • Participants in visitor programmes organised by German federal authorities, only if costs are fully covered.
  • Participants in conferences or training courses organised by the federal authorities, political foundations or GIZ, if costs are fully covered.
  • Scholarship holders whose scholarship is paid from public funds.
  • Spouses and children of Germans, only if a German birth or marriage certificate can be produced for all travellers, or the document verification process has already been done with a positive outcome.
  • Re-entry visas, if you have lost your residence permit.

How do I ask for an Abuja interview?

If you meet the requirements, the page says you can email the embassy to request a visa interview. In all other cases, it says the Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for your application.

If you live in a listed state but fit none of the cases, the page still says Lagos is responsible. If in doubt, it says to contact the Embassy or Consulate General before booking an appointment.

The lists can change. We read the page on 29 October 2026, so check it again before you act.

What does the Accra embassy ask of non-Ghanaian applicants?

The German Embassy in Accra has its own student visa page. In its document list, one item is for applicants whose nationality is not Ghanaian, Liberian or Sierra Leonean: a residence permit for Ghana, if applicable.

With it, the page asks you to upload documents such as a rent contract, working contract and electricity bills. If you are residing in Ghana, you also upload your Non-Citizen Ghana Card.

The page does not mention Nigerians by name. It only lists what to upload, so a Nigerian living in Ghana should read it in full and, if unsure, ask the embassy.

The Lagos list has a matching item the other way round: a copy of a residence permit for Nigeria, as proof of legal residence, only for applicants whose nationality is not Nigerian.

I live in Abuja (FCT) and have a scholarship. Which mission do I use?

For the long-term visa, the page lists scholarship holders whose scholarship is paid from public funds as one of the cases, for people living in the listed states (FCT is on the list). If that is you, it says to email the embassy to request a visa interview. Otherwise Lagos is responsible. 1

I am Nigerian and live in Ghana. What do I upload at Accra?

The Accra student visa page asks non-Ghanaian applicants, where it applies, for their Ghana residence permit with extra proof such as a rent contract or electricity bills. If you reside in Ghana you also upload your Non-Citizen Ghana Card. 3
